    Daniel Craig has made a special visit to the heart of the Swiss Omega replica watchmaking industry for the inauguration of the OMEGA factory in Villeret, Switzerland.     For OMEGA, Daniel Craig’s visit to Villeret was a momentous occasion. Together with Nick Hayek, Swatch Group CEO, and Stephen Urquhart, President of OMEGA, Craig was shown exactly what goes into making OMEGA watches such as the one he wears in SPECTRE. As an avid collector himself, he was fascinated by the engineering and expertise on show.

    “I think what was so impressive was the fact that these fake Omega watches are made from the ground up. You start with nothing, and then there’s suddenly a working watch. That’s the beauty of it. To see the engineering that goes into it and the legacy that goes into it, that’s what fascinated me.”

    The Seamaster has been James Bond’s watch since GoldenEye (1995), with its naval history and classic style, the watch perfectly reflects Bond’s character. Now, in celebration of the new movie, fans and watch collectors will be able to buy the model worn by 007 in SPECTRE, as the OMEGA Seamaster 300 will go on sale as a limited edition. The release marks a first for the partnership; until now, only commemorative editions have been used to celebrate OMEGA’s link with the franchise.

  • Speedy Tuesday – Rob’s Omega Replica Speedmaster Professional 105.012-66CB

    It’s Speedy Tuesday! One of our readers, Rob, mailed us with some great news. He purchased a beautiful Speedmaster Professional 105.012-66CB from the first owner.

    Rob explains: “….. the watch was purchased by the previous owner while he was in the medical corps of the Navy (in the midst of the Vietnam War, although I’m not sure if he actually wore it overseas or saw action). He wore it for a little while, but eventually moved on to something else and basically just left it in a drawer for decades. Thankfully, the original papers were kept with the watch and given the light use over the ensuing decades, the case and dial are quite possibly the cleanest I’ve ever seen for this reference.”

    It is uncertain where this beautiful Omega Replica Speedmaster Professional 105.012-66CB was bought originally, but the watch was bought in 1968. The Speedmaster Professional 105.012-66CB was made from 1966 till 1968 and the serial number (or movement number, as Omega officially calls it) refers to somewhere 1967. Unlike many Speedmaster enthusiasts think, the year in the reference number doesn’t automatically refer to the production year of the watch. You always have to check the serial number to be certain. Omega keeps track of two dates actually, the serial number that refers to the production date and the date it was delivered to one of their agents. Then, of course, you have the date when the watch was sold. There can be quite a bit of time between those dates, for various reasons.

    Another interesting aspect about this Omega Speedmaster Professional 105.012-66CB is the ‘CB’ part. CB stands for Le Centrale Boites and was one of the (two) case makers used by Omega Replica Watches for the Speedmaster. The other case maker was Huguenin Frères. There are some differences in cases made by these two manufacturers, which is ‘unthinkable’ these days, as the specifications that are supplied by the brand should be leading at all times. However, it was in a different era and perhaps CB had good reasons to do things differently from HF. The CB cases are becoming more difficult to find in an unpolished condition but the good news is that it is very easy to spot. The lugs happen to be a bit more flat on the upper side, and have this very thin facet next to it (on the inside). This thin facet is easily gone when being polished and an easy way to detect sloppy polish-work.

    Rob bought this Speedmaster Pro 105.012-66CB with the original warranty papers, which where then filled-in by hand (name of the buyer, serial number, reference number and date of the sale). It is interesting to see that the original owner had his name and title engraved in the case back. I personally like this type of ‘personal history’ on a watch. It shouldn’t influence the value of the watch as far as I am concerned in negative nor positive way. The condition of the watch is much more important.

    Our reader got into mechanical watches just 1.5 years ago, and from the start, he knew that the Omega Speedmaster was something special. As he described it in his e-mail to us, “it was apparent that a Speedmaster was universally recommended for anyone’s collection, regardless of one’s wealth / penchant for expensive pieces. The history, in my very humble opinion, is unmatched by any other sport watch and the design is perhaps the most unchanged of any watch that’s been in production over a similar time period. In short – it’s historically significant, timelessly designed, rugged, and able to be had at a relatively affordable price (especially 145.022’s and other 861 calibers).”

    Like many other (starting) Speedmaster collectors, Rob was first after a 145.022 from a very early period, preferably the transitional model that has the applied Omega Replica Seamaster logo but with the caliber 861 movement. A very cool looking watch with the aesthetics of the 145.012 and 105.012 but about half the price of those. However, his first buy was actually a Speedmaster reference 105.003-65 he stumbled upon in Denmark. No more than six months later, Rob added this beautiful Omega Speedmaster Professional 105.012-66CB to the collection as well. Quite an amazing start for someone relatively new into watches (and Speedmasters).

    Before Omega’s legendary Speedmaster watch was worn by astronauts on the moon — and thus forever linked to space exploration and assigned the nickname “Moonwatch” — it was much more closely associated with the decidedly earthbound activity of automobile racing. In fact, when Omega introduced the first Speedmaster in 1957, it designed the watch’s dial to resemble the dashboard of that era’s Italian sports cars. Motorsports and rally drivers prized the Speedmaster for its chronograph capability and for the fact that it was the first chronograph watch that positioned its tachymeter scale on the bezel rather than the dial.

    The Omega Replica Speedmaster Racing, on the market since 2012, is a return to the brand’s automotive roots. There is also a date window at the 6 o’clock position; Omega includes a date corrector tool with each watch.

    The movement inside the Speedmaster racing is Omega’s in-house Caliber 3330, with a column-wheel chronograph mechanism, a silicon balance spring and the brand’s trademark co-axial escapement. Omega Replica Constellation is so confident about the watch’s timekeeping performance and reliability — the movement has been certified as a chronometer by the Swiss testing agency COSC — that it delivers it with a four-year warranty.

    The watch comes on a steel bracelet or a black rubber strap with a distinctive embossed pattern that bring to mind the treads of a race car’s tires — just another way the Swiss brand is putting the “speed” back in its Speedmaster.     We take an exclusive, world-first up close look with replica Omega’s new Bond watches

    As marketing associations go, making the watch that James Bond wears is pretty much the most powerful there is. Forget new Omega replica watches worn by racing drivers, or actors, or even actors who were also racing drivers – this is bigger.

    If you doubt this at all, consider this: most watches that are delivered to QP Towers for us to pore over, photograph and review, come in pretty mundane plastic and polystyrene packaging – even the six-figure ones. When Omega sent the Seamaster 300 Master Co-axial Chronometer that Daniel Craig will wear in next month’s SPECTRE, it came in its full presentation box, complete with three-digit combination lock (no prizes for guessing what the code was), Omega-logo push-button clasp and a fair amount of what can only be described as “new car smell”. The message was clear: James Bond’s watch does not travel second class. Never mind spying; Omega understands that Bond is all about theatre, about grand gestures and small details.

    Omega has been producing James Bond’s watches since Pierce Brosnan serendipitously ended up wearing a Seamaster 300m in Goldeneye and the pattern since them has been pretty much the same: new film; new fake Omega watches, usually a Seamaster or Planet Ocean model, with a number of 007-related design tropes slotted in to make the point.

    This year, however, it sprung a surprise. Having already released a SPECTRE watch, back in February, word reached us a few weeks ago that there was going to be another Bond watch this year. And this one is… different. You could describe the flashy Seamaster Aqua Terra from February, with its bright yellow accents and Bond coat of arms adorning the second hand, as the watch of the film. This? This is the watch of the man himself.

    This is the Replica Omega De Ville watch that – we understand – Daniel Craig will be seen wearing during the film; not the Aqua Terra (although it’s entirely possible he’ll sport both at some point). And it is the antithesis of everything we’ve come to expect from an Omega Bond watch. The numbers “007” do not appear anywhere on the dial, and only very discreetly on one of the keepers for the NATO strap. There are no bright colours – instead we have the same vintage-hued luminova on the arrow hands and hour indexes as you find on the standard Co-axial 300, and the same glossy black ceramic on the bezel.

    Indeed, the changes to the watch are relatively minimal. The 12 has disappeared, replaced with a larger-than-usual Omega logo and text. The pointed second hand has been replaced with a “lollipop” style hand – which we just think is great, and does more than you would expect to influence the whole design. Most significantly from a functional point of view, the bezel notation has been changed from a minutes counter to a 0-11 hours scale, meaning the watch can be used to track two timezones. It also now rotates in both directions to reflect the change of purpose; this little switch makes the Seamaster less of a diving watch and more of an explorer’s timepiece.

    Otherwise, it’s the same 41mm case, same lovely mixture of polished facets and brushed caseband, same unguarded crown, and of course the same co-axial, antimagnetic (to 15,000+ gauss) caliber. Of course, because this is a limited edition (7,007 pieces being made; some habits do die hard) there is some custom engraving on the caseback, reading “SPECTRE” and the numbered edition. But that’s mostly hidden by the strap (as is the sapphire display window).

    Oh yes, that strap. We’d almost forgotten. In a great gesture to James Bond fans (and very possibly a sign of the times; after all, Tudor et al now sell watches on canvas straps as standard), Omega has equipped the SPECTRE Seamaster with a mil-spec NATO strap in black and grey stripes. Bond watch nerds will correctly observe that this is not the same configuration as the nine-band navy blue, red and olive NATO made famous by the oddly ill-fitting strap on Sean Connery’s Rolex Submariner in Thunderball. But it is a wholly suitable strap for this Replica Omega Seamaster watch, and has to stand as one of the main reasons Bond fans are going to love it.

    Having worn the watch, as well, it’s hard to imagine it on a bracelet or – heaven forbid – a leather strap. That would risk returning this subtle design to the levels of the core collection, and deprive it of its man-of-action status. It works that it’s light and breezy; some Bond watches in the past have been weighed down with their own seriousness – much like the films they accompanied. It’s no great stretch at all to say that this is Omega’s Casino Royale – back to basics, stylish, energetic and muscular. And very much one for the fans.
