  • Baselworld 2015: Omega Replica Globemaster Introduces All-New “Master Chronometer” Movement

    Last year, to some fanfare, Omega Replica Seamaster introduced its new watch certification system, developed in cooperation with METAS, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (you can read about it here). This week, at Baselworld, Omega introduces the very first watch developed to meet these “Master Chronometer” criteria: the new Omega Globemaster, which takes design cues from historical Omega Constellation watches.

    The two major aesthetic features of the Omega Globemaster that fans of vintage Omega will appreciate are the “pie pan” dial, which echoes that of a vintage Constellation from 1952; and the fluted bezel, an element used on several vintage Constellation watches, most notably a collector-beloved model from 1968. The 39-mm case (available in stainless steel, yellow gold, two-tone steel and yellow gold, and Omega’s proprietary Sedna gold) has a brushed finish, with two polished bevels connecting the edges of the lugs to the bezel. The top ridges of the fluted bezel (which is made of exceptionally hard tungsten carbide on the all-steel model) have a smoothed finish. The sapphire crystal is domed and scratch-resistant.

    The Omega Globemaster is available in two dial styles, with a silvered opaline dial (available on the steel, gold, and two-tone versions) and a blue sunbrushed dial (available on the steel and two-tone). Several strap and bracelet options are offered. The hour hands, minute hands, and hour indices are all treated with Super-LumiNova, and a date window appears at 6 o’clock.

    Of course, the real story here is on the inside of the watch, where we find Omega’s Caliber 8900, the first “Master Chronometer” movement, so named because it meets both the official chronometer standards of the Swiss testing agency COSC, but also the criteria set forth by Omega Replica Speedmaster‘s own METAS certification. To be specific, these are the the eight criteria measured by the latter process:

    • The movement function during exposure to a magnetic field of 15,000 gauss

    • The deviation of the watch’s running time in six positions

    • The deviation of the watch’s running time between 0 and 2/3 of its power reserve

    • The watch’s function during exposure to a magnetic field of 15,000 gauss

    • The deviation of the watch’s average daily precision after exposure to a magnetic field of 15,000 gauss

    • The watch’s average daily precision in tests replicating daily wearing conditions (six positions, two temperatures)

    • The watch’s power reserve (autonomy – functioning without winding)

    • The watch’s water resistance (tested in water)

    Ultimately, the watch is required to perform within a tolerance of 0 to +5 seconds per day during and after exposure to the 15,000 gauss magnetic field to receive the Master Chronometer designation.

    A final aesthetic touch, which pays tribute Omega’s history of high-precision timepieces, is found on the gold medallion set into the Globemaster’s sapphire exhibition caseback, which features an engraving of an observatory’s cupola — a reference to the site where the famed chronometry tests of the 1940s and ’50s took place — surrounded by a sky dotted with eight stars. The stars serve the dual purpose of referencing both the most important eight of those chronometry awards won by Omega throughout its history and the eight Master Chronometer criteria. Best of all, since the medallion doesn’t cover the entire caseback, the wearer still gets a view of Caliber 8900/8901 and its swinging Sedna gold rotor.

    Before Omega’s legendary Speedmaster watch was worn by astronauts on the moon — and thus forever linked to space exploration and assigned the nickname “Moonwatch” — it was much more closely associated with the decidedly earthbound activity of automobile racing. In fact, when Omega introduced the first Speedmaster in 1957, it designed the watch’s dial to resemble the dashboard of that era’s Italian sports cars.     The watch comes on a steel bracelet or a black rubber strap with a distinctive embossed pattern that bring to mind the treads of a race car’s tires — just another way the Swiss brand is putting the “speed” back in its Speedmaster.   • Fratello Friday: Our Prediction for a New Replica Omega Speedmaster at Baselworld 2015

    I would like to use this week’s Fratello Friday to make an educated guess on a new watch that Omega is likely to present during Baselworld 2015 later this month. Almost every year, Omega Replica Seamaster Watches introduces a limited or special-edition Omega Speedmaster to commemorate historical achievements by NASA in which a Speedmaster was involved.

    For example, every five years, Omega introduces a Speedmaster Professional Apollo XI limited anniversary edition to commemorate the moon landing in 1969. Last year, it was the Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo XI 45th Anniversary edition (we covered it here), limited to (naturally) 1,969 pieces.

    So, going through the list of Apollo missions, we see that Omega would have only a few milestones to commemorate in 2015. There are the 1970 Apollo XIII mission and the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz mission. I also had a look at Space Shuttle missions, (for which the Omega Speedmaster got re-certified; (remember we’ve found one of 56 pieces here?), but it wasn’t until 1981 that the first Space Shuttle (STS-1) mission took place.

    Since Omega did an Apollo-Soyuz limited edition in 2009, with a beautiful meteorite dial (we reviewed it here and here) — and in fact had already done others in 1975 (500 pieces only, we talked about it here), and gold versions in 1995 (250 pieces) and 2000 (50 pieces), I think Omega will drop a new Apollo 13 mission limited edition on us this year.

    Now, officially,Replica Omega Speedmaster Watches released a limited edition to commemorate the Apollo XIII mission in 1995, and used the same watch for the famous white mission cases (50 pieces in total). The model from 1995 was limited (and numbered) to 999 pieces only. I say officially, because an unofficial, but very much Apollo XIII-related, model came out in 2003: the Omega Speedmaster Professional “Snoopy Award.” I am a bit in the dark as to why Omega chose that year to introduce this watch, but I will make sure to ask Omega in Basel.

    The Omega Speedmaster Professional ‘Snoopy’ is a much sought-after modern Speedmaster. I did a write-up on how Snoopy ended up on the dial of a Speedmaster in an article for WatchTime.com, which can be found here.

    I actually own both the Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo XIII and the Snoopy Award model, and cherish them both. While the Snoopy watch tells us the story of the accident during the Apollo XIII mission in 1970 in which a Speedmaster came to the rescue, the 1995 Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo XIII simply shows a (beautiful) mission patch on the subdial.

    Until now, if we look at the Apollo XI mission models, we only saw a mission patch at 3 o’clock, on the Missions Suit Case version of 1998 (here is one that was sold separately, though). We also have Apollo XI models with an inscription in the case band, only on the caseback or using silver or even gold medallions on the subdial. The 45th anniversary Apollo XI model didn’t have anything referring to the mission on the dial, it was just an entirely different execution of the famous “Moonwatch,” with its titanium case and Sedna gold bezel.

    So, in other words, chances are pretty slim that Omega Replica Constellation Watches will simply use the official NASA Apollo XIII mission patch again. One of the possibilities is that Omega will use the Snoopy Award again as the commemorative aspect. This would either make it “only” an Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo XIII 45th anniversary or an Omega Speedmaster Professional “Snoopy Award,” version 2. I can’t imagine the latter, as it confuses people. My best guess would be that it will become the Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo XIII 45th Anniversary edition, hopefully with a Snoopy image somewhere. If Omega indeed decides to include Snoopy somewhere, I hope the company will do it as tastefully as it did with the 2003 Snoopy Award edition. This particular limited edition is a watch from my personal collection that I really cherish.

    Also, given the fact that the number of limited-edition Apollo models available has gone down drastically in the last few years, I think you need to act quickly, and as soon as you like what you see, order it. The Apollo XI 45th edition was limited to “just” 1,969 pieces and those skyrocketed out of the boutiques. Now, since Omega knows about the demand for these limited editions, especially the demand for the Snoopy (and the 1995 Apollo XIII model, for that matter), it just may make a few more than 1,970 pieces this time around. That is my hope, anyway. Either that or I’m able to snag one of the 1,970 pieces in time.

    Obviously, we’ll have to wait until March 19th to be sure, but I am convinced the parameters for such a watch (i.e, 1970, Apollo XIII) are clear.

  • Omega’s Replica 4 New Speedmaster “Dark Side of the Moon” Watches for 2015

    All four of the new Speedmasters bear certain crucial similarities. They’re all certified chronometers. They all have a bicompax chronograph layout: the chronograph hours and minutes are in the 3-o’clock subdial, running seconds are at 9 o’clock and a date window is at 6. They all bear a tachymeter scale around the bezel. There are nonreflective sapphire crystals on the front and back.

    Under the dial, all have Omega Replica Speedmaster Co-Axial caliber 9300: an automatic, 4-Hz movement that runs in 54 jewels. It has two serially mounted barrels for a 60-hour power reserve. Its balance spring is made of silicon and it has a column-wheel chronograph mechanism. There are Geneva waves on the movement and the screws, barrels and balance wheel have all been blackened to keep to the dress code.

    The first of the new watches has an extra-demonstrative name: the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon “Black Black.” So nice they had to say it twice, the Black Black has a polished and brushed ceramic case and a matte black ceramic dial. The brushed hands are blackened, as are the applied indexes. The chronograph subdial hands as well as the indexes have black Super-LumiNova on them. On the bezel, the scale for the tachymeter is in black lacquer. The Black Black comes on a coated nylon fabric strap with a black ceramic clasp. Price: $12,000.

    Next up is the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon “Pitch Back.” Its case is in polished black ceramic, while the ceramic bezel has been brushed for a different finish. It has matte black subdials with varnished hands. Its distinctive feature is the Super-LumiNova coating for its indexes and on its tachymeter scale. It has a black leather strap with ecru stitching and a ceramic folding clasp. Price: $12,000.

    Omega Replica Hour Vision used its special proprietary alloy for the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon “Sedna Black.” The brushed black ceramic case is complemented by a bezel ring in 18-karat Sedna gold. The tachymeter scale is also embedded with the same color of luminous coating. It has a brushed ceramic case and a matte ceramic dial. The centrally mounted hands are blackened, while the subdial hands are brown. Price: $12,000.
