  • Omega Replica presents the Globemaster: the world’s first Master Chronometer

    Omega Replica Seamaster hosted a highly attended event at Basel’s von Bartha art gallery where the brand unveiled the highlight of its new collection and the certification that makes it such a revolutionary timepiece. The Globemaster, with its iconic pie-pan dial and fluted bezel, is the world’s first Master Chronometer – it is the first mechanical timepiece to not only exceed the standards established by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC) but also pass the stringent tests that are part of the certification process approved by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS).

    OMEGA announced that it would be working with METAS to develop the new certification process, which includes testing the watch and its movement in magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss, at a press conference in December of 2014. The unveiling of the eight criteria that a watch must pass in order to achieve Master Chronometer status is the follow-up to the news that OMEGA and Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek shared with the public last year.

    Stephen Urquhart, president of OMEGA, explained some of the brand’s major milestones and described how important innovation, implementation and industrialization are for OMEGA.

    Alluding to the press conference OMEGA held in December, Mr Urquhart said: “Some of you might have been with us in Geneva in December where we announced a new certification process and a new quality standard for watchmaking in general and for OMEGA. Now we have finalized that whole process and to make it really meaningful we have a watch that we decided to launch which will be the flagship of the OMEGA brand in the future.”

    OMEGA Vice President of Product and Customer Service Jean-Claude Monachon presented the METAS certification process and described the Globemaster in more detail. He explained that the eight stars on the caseback of the watch not only signify eight of the most important precision records that OMEGA’s movements set in the 1940s and 1950s, they also represent the eight tests a watch must pass to become a Master Chronometer.

    The symbolic use of these eight stars and the eight certification criteria show that Omega Replica Speedmaster aims to offer its customers only the best when it comes to precision, he said.

    Following Mr Urquhart’s and Mr Monachon’s presentations, the guests were welcomed into an area with showcases displaying the vintage models that inspired the Globemaster and the full Globemaster collection. Writing on the walls surrounding the displays described the Globemaster timepieces and outlined the criteria a watch and its movement must pass in order to become certified as a Master Chronometer.

    The exhibition also included an interactive station where guests could learn about the strength of the magnetic fields of objects they use on a daily basis and they could even measure the magnetic fields of their personal items, like cell phones, tablets, cameras or handbag clasps.

    The Globemaster

    Created in the true spirit of OMEGA, the Globemaster houses the brand’s most advanced mechanical movement and features a design inspired by early Constellation models that represent horological expertise and OMEGA’s legacy of precision and outstanding performance. Each watch is certified through a series of independent tests – a revolutionary process that establishes a new quality standard in the watch industry.

    Two design features that define the Globemaster are its dial, which is created in a style that watch collectors have long referred to as a pie-pan dial, and the “fluted” bezel, an element that has decorated several famous Constellation watches.

    Omega Replica Constellation history also influenced the Globemaster’s caseback.   • Monochrome Monday – Baselworld 2015: Omega Replica Speedmaster Moonwatch Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award

    This is the one we (almost) predicted on our Monochrome-Watches blog. We were 90% sure that Omega Replica Hour Vision would come with a new edition of the Snoopy Speedmaster Professional. The one we imagined, however, is quite far from this new Omega Replica Speedmaster Moonwatch Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award ref. 311.32.42.30.04.003. Using the iconic Speedy Pro base, it brings not only a new dial but also several little details that will definitely create a proper collectible edition.

    Before we go into what is new in this Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award, let’s first look at what hasn’t changed. The base of this limited edition (1.970 pieces) is THE classic Omega Speedmaster Professional a.k.a Moonwatch, meaning a 42mm chronograph made in both polished and brushed stainless steel, with a 3-counter layout and deploying the Omega Caliber 1861. Technically speaking, Omega has adhered to nearly the same (and totally superb) recipe since 1965. A Snoopy Award edition of the Speedmaster isn’t a novelty, as Omega introduced a first version (made in 5441 pieces) in 2003 – that showed a patch with Snoopy sketched in the sub-counter at 9 and a specific caseback.

    For Baselworld 2015, Omega is coming with a new edition that celebrates the 45th Anniversary of the unfortunate Apollo 13 mission. Why Snoopy though? “On April 17, 1970, the world watched as the Apollo 13 Command Module landed in the Pacific Ocean after an unexpected crisis occurred 200,000 miles away from Earth. The mission was aborted and the astronauts completed a number of mid-course corrections in order to achieve the trajectory that would allow them to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere. Both the Apollo 13 crew members and Omega Replica Constellation received the Silver Snoopy Award (a NASA mascot) in recognition of its contributions to the entire Apollo program.”

    The 2015 edition of the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award shows a black & white color scheme and several details that recall the space mission and the award. The dial shows a white background with black inscriptions and hands. The indexes are luminous white plots with top cavities filled with black varnish. The small-second sub-counter at 9 o’clock shows the NASA mascot Snoopy saying “Failure is not an option”.

    Something else is also highly noticeable: on the 14 seconds scale starting from 0 is written “what could you do in 14 seconds?” – a reference to the length of the thrust the astronauts needed to achieve in order to set the module on its orbit. The bezel is also specific to this Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award edition. Even if it might look similar to the classic Moonwatch, this one is made of Polished black ceramic [ZrO2] with a Super-LumiNova tachymeter scale.

    The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award also comes with a dedicated caseback. Protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is a 925 silver medallion that resembles the pin that accompanied the Silver Snoopy Award that OMEGA received in 1970. The silver Snoopy is mounted on a plate of the same material and is surrounded by dark blue enamel.

    Finally, the strap of this new Speedmaster Snoopy differs from the one found on the classic edition; this one has a black coated nylon fabric strap with white stitching, reinforced around the holes and featuring a foldover clasp.   • Dive Watch Test: Omega Replica Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Co-Axial

    The Omega Replica Seamaster Watches Planet Ocean 600M Co-axial boasts very high-quality, well-crafted components, which contribute to its considerable sturdiness. The case, made of titanium, suffered only the slightest scratches during our test dive: The faint blemishes were almost impossible to detect on the sides of the case, which are satin finished.

    The bezel remained unscathed because it has ceramic inlays like those on the bezel of another watch we tested, the Oris Tubbataha. The numerals and indices on the Omega’s bezel are made of “liquid metal,” a metal alloy with such a low melting point (400 degrees Celsius) that the molten metal can be pressed into the bezel’s notches without damaging the surrounding ceramic.

    Steel alloys ordinarily used for watches have a hardness between 200 and 240 Vickers, but liquid metal is harder: 600 Vickers. The ceramic used for the bezel is even harder (1,200 Vickers), so after the liquid metal has been pressed into the notches, any excess alloy can be scraped away without marring the ceramic. Omega’s combination of ceramic and liquid metal results in a very hard and finely crafted dive-time ring.

    The ceramic on our test Replica Omega Constellation Watches has the same lush blue color as the carefully crafted dial and the rubber strap. With its organic-looking surface and contrasting stitching, the rubber strap looks like leather and makes an elegant impression. It has a sturdy titanium clasp with two safety buttons and an embossed Omega logo.

    The bezel is easy to turn, provided the wearer’s diving gloves are no thicker than 3 mm. The rotating bezel clicks cleanly into each of its half-minute settings without wiggling.

    User-friendliness is unfortunately not as good under water as it is above. Reading the dive time is extremely difficult because the bezel doesn’t provide enough contrast. But even the time of day can be hard to make out: The hour and minutes hands, both with arrowheads, are so similar that they can be difficult to tell apart in turbulent or murky water. If you descend to darker depths, the luminous paint on the hands is too sparse to assure absolute clarity.

    The paint itself shines very brightly and the minutes hand, unlike all the other displays, glows yellow rather than green. The indices are nice and wide, too. These features combine to make the time very easy to read on land both day and night. The poor legibility only occurs under water, so the watch’s legibility received an overall rating of “good” in our test.

    Another shortcoming – and one that we found on nearly all of our test watches – is the crystal’s inability to compensate for the peculiar way that light refracts under water. The front crystal is highly reflective: If you turn the Omega Replica De Ville Watches even slightly, the dial you could read a moment ago can change into a totally reflective surface.

    This effect disappears entirely when you return to the water’s surface, where you can view the face from the side to enjoy the three-dimensional look of the dial, which has applied indices and an applied logo. We weren’t so happy with the black date disk: It’s the only element that doesn’t match the blue of the rest of the watch.

    The date display can be reset backward if necessary, rather than having to move it dozens of days forward. It jumps forward to tomorrow or back to yesterday as necessary when you set the hour hand forward or backward in hourly increments.

    The watch contains Omega’s own automatic Caliber 8500, which deserves kudos for its distinctive embellishments and modern construction, including a balance bridge rather than a balance cock, a freely swinging hairspring, and four regulating screws on the balance. The balance spring is made of silicon.

  • Master Makeover: Testing the Omega Replica Seamaster Aqua Terra

    Omega’s in-house base Caliber 8500 debuted in the De Ville Hour Vision at the beginning of 2007, and has since served in many Omega Replica Seamaster Watches. Among these is the Seamaster Aqua Terra, which was outfitted with the automatic movement in 2008. Omega has also refined the watch’s exterior. The formerly smooth dial now sports vertical, parallel ridges, and the frame around the date display has been raised higher above the plane of the dial. The frame’s faceting is a good match for the distinctively three-dimensional hour indices, which are now coated with luminous material. Two-digit numerals at five-minute intervals have replaced the small, luminous dots around the periphery of the old Aqua Terra’s dial. The hands are double-faceted along their longitudinal axes, matching the faceting on the indices, and a welcome replacement for the simple fold that defines the long axes of the older hands.

    The dial makes a high-quality impression, as does the 41.5-millimeter-diameter case, whose shape has remained the same. Credit for the visual panache is mostly due to the middle piece, which has organically curving lugs and very precisely alternating polished and satin-finished surfaces. On the Omega Replica  Speedmaster Watches we tested, only the transition to the lugs, where the polishing disk couldn’t reach into the narrow angles, is less than meticulously executed. Otherwise, the craftsmanship of the case is excellent. The case has sapphire crystals in the front and back, with nonreflective treatment on both surfaces of the front crystal. The crown can be screwed shut and the back is threaded around its periphery. These details guarantee that the case can resist 150 meters’ worth of water pressure.

    The attention to quality is also evident in the stainless-steel bracelet, although the styling here has fewer details than that of the dial and case. The bracelet is massive but not too thick, and its links are solidly screwed. Its upper surface is satin-finished and its flanks are polished.

    The double-folding clasp has its pluses and minuses. All components, including the two safety buttons, have been milled from a solid block of steel, and the lack of a closure bow gives the clasp a very elegant appearance on the wrist. But the bracelet’s length cannot be adjusted by means of spring bars, so the only way to do so is to use a screwdriver to remove either half a link or an entire link until the bracelet fits perfectly. This means that the wearer cannot adjust the bracelet for minor variations in the size of his wrist without using a tool. Furthermore, the safety buttons open only one wing of the double-folding clasp, so the wearer must then flip open the other side by giving it a little tug.

    This watch is very easy to operate. Its crown is constructed in such a way that it is firmly screwed, but has a large and easy-to-grip surface and snaps smartly into its various positions. After the crown has been unscrewed, the Replica Omega  Hour Vision Watches offers little resistance and clicks almost inaudibly when its mainspring is manually wound — although manual winding won’t be necessary very often, because this self-winding watch amasses a 60-hour power reserve.     René Bannwart is considered the father of the Omega Seamaster line. The man who would later found Corum had begun building Omega’s design department in 1940. This was new. Bannwart felt that Vallat wasn’t giving him enough time, so he presented one of his case designs with the comment “much too clunky.” To Bannwart’s surprise, Vallat was delighted. The result was the Seamaster family. It had its origins in Omega Replica Seamaster Watches supplied to Britain’s Royal Air Force in World War II. The 1948 civilian version of the pilots’ watch had a water-resistant case (to 50 meters), a screwed caseback with lead gaskets, a reinforced crystal, a silvered dial, and polished and riveted Arabic numerals. The premier model was powered by Caliber 28.10 RA SC PC RG AM (nicknamed the “352”), which first appeared in 1945. This caliber wound itself via a unidirectional hammer-type winding weight.     Omega Speedmaster (1957)

    The Omega Replica Speedmaster Watches, destined to become the most famous chronograph in the world because of its use by NASA for the Apollo program, was introduced in 1957. But the Speedmaster story really begins in 1943 with chronograph Caliber 27 CHRO C12, developed by Jacques Reymond. Born into a long-established family of watchmakers, Reymond had joined Omega’s subsidiary Lemania in 1942. The “CHRO” in the caliber designation stood for “chronograph,” the “27” referred to the movement’s diameter in millimeters, and “C12” denoted the additional counter for 12 elapsed hours. Further developed by Albert Piguet in 1946 and christened by Omega with the shorter name “321,” this movement was the smallest of its type at the time. Credit for the Speedmaster case design belonged to a group at Lemania, including designer Claude Baillod, prototype-maker Georges Hartmann and machinist Désiré Faivre. The watch’s salient features were a black dial, luminous hands, a tachymeter scale, water-resistant case, screwed back and domed Plexiglas crystal. The diameter was originally 39 mm. A 40-mm version with the tachymeter scale on a black background along the flange appeared in 1960.

The white dial contrasts the black varnished Moonwatch-style hands and the polished black ceramic bezel, which features a Super-LumiNova tachymeter scale. Super-LumiNova is also found on the central hour, minute and chronograph seconds hands. The luminescent material was used to make the indexes and their glow is enhanced by the black varnish that fills the indexes’ top cavities.

    Words to live by

    Distinguishing this limited edition timepiece are the two inscriptions that decorate the dial. Fourteen small squares between zero and 14 seconds on the dial come together to form a long comic strip, with the words “What could you do in 14 seconds?” written underneath. The question is a nod to the 14-second mid-course correction that the Apollo 13 astronauts timed with their on-board back-up timing device: the OMEGA Speedmaster.

    At the centre of the dial is the quote: “Failure is not an option.” These inspiring words were spoken by actor Ed Harris who played Apollo 13 Flight Director Gene Kranz in the 1995 film about the historic mission, Apollo 13. A small image of a sleeping Snoopy painted on the dial with Super-LumiNova is positioned in the small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock and it appears as if he is dreaming of the token phrase that is often used in association with the mission.

    One-of-a-kind caseback

    Among the most interesting and intriguing features of the timepiece is its alluring caseback. Protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is a 925 silver medallion that resembles the pin that accompanied the Silver Snoopy Award that Omega Replica De Ville received in 1970.
